Return Funding to REALskills

REALskills is a project of The Family Centre, the name standing for Relationships Education And Life skills. REALskills has been developing and delivering programs in public schools in the Tweed Shire since 2001 and has become an invaluable asset, proving itself to be a trusted source of information for many students. In November 2014 REALskills took out the top award for best community group or team at the Northern Rivers Community Sector Awards Night, demonstrating the value local communities have placed on the service.

Having participated in both Take a Stand, a one day program focusing on self respect, values, personal boundaries, peer pressure and being safe (drug and alcohol, sexual expression, violence and bullying), as well as Switched On, a 2 day program focusing on respectful intimate relationships, sex and sexuality, gender issues, domestic violence and sexual assault, my high school has relied on the work of REALskills to meet the welfare needs of students.

I am horrified to think that, only a week after Prime Minister Tony Abbott has vowed to make domestic violence a top priority at the Council of Australian Government (COAG) conference, thousands of students like myself will lose a vitally important program. REALskills has acted as a critical front line service focused on an early intervention approach; in turn relieving the pressure on already exhausted child protection, youth homelessness and intensive family support services.

To axe the funding of a service that has been the only provider of education on issues like domestic violence and sexual assault poses putting thousands of students at risk. If both Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Minister for Social Services Scott Morrison are serious about tackling these incredibly important issues, I call upon them to reinstate funding for the REALskills program and keep the service North Coast students rely upon alive.
