Restore peace in Darjeeling Hills

The Gorkhaland agitation has brought the hill town of Darjeeling on its knees. The land whose air ought to be filled with the aroma of tea leaves and Buddhist chants now reeks with the smell of smoke and blood and echoes with cries for a separate state of Gorkhaland. Hill folk are finding it difficult to go about their daily lives.

The strikes are now about to complete 60 days, with no signs of retreating. The reputation of Darjeeling as a popular tourist destination has suffered an irreversible damage, while the the Centre and the State continue to stay mum. The latest in the offing is UNESCO contemplating the World Heritage Tag earned by the toy train of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. With the agitators torching two of its stations, the tag is in peril.

Letting the strikes go on indefinitely is not in the interests of the nation. This is to urge the Centre to hold talks with the Gorkhaland agitators and restore peace and normalcy in the hills. Darjeeling is one of the last few Himalayan kingdoms we want to see burning.
