Since India has had an underlining mindset of racism for years, it is embedded in their culture. It is seen to be more beautiful to have a lighter complexion. For example, there are advertisements for products that “lighten” the skin and say that it is better for people. Production companies also use celebrities that have a lighter complexion to sell their products. There have also been many matrimonial companies using only people with the lighter complexion to show a happier couple. Recently the hashtag, #BlackLivesMatter, also became popular in India but what India fails to realize is there is racism going on in their own country. Instead of worrying about another country’s race issue, it might be better to focus on their own. This “trend” on social media has brought some awareness and attention to India’s issues of racism.
