In a bid to battle the falling proportion of seats in the IITs and NITs, the HRD Ministry has constituted a 3-member committee headed by IIT Kharagpur Director, Partha Pratim Chakraborty on Tuesday. Every year, thousands of seats have been lying vacant at the IITs and NITs. Despite conducting six phases of counselling for IITs and NITs admission, around 3, 000 seats across the technical institutes are lying vacant. Learning about the increasing number of vacancies, which the HRD Ministry considered as a waste of resources, the ministry attempt to conduct another round of counselling to fill every seat across the institutes.
Seats vacant in technical institutes:
Of the 3, 000 seats lying vacant, 73 seats were in the IITs
There are over 1, 518 seats lying vacant across the NITs
NIT Agartala - 126 seats vacant, NIT Nagaland - 107 seats vacant, NIT Rourkela - 101 seats vacant, NIT Srinagar - 108 seats vacant, NIT Jalandhar - 110 seats vacant, NIT Surat - 115 seats vacant
As many as 1, 409 seats were lying vacant across the centrally funded technical institutes besides IITs and NITs.
HRD pushes the Institutes to fill all vacant seats:
While speaking to TOI, HRD Minister Spokesperson vouched that rounds of counselling will be conducted until all seats are filled. "However, from next year onwards, counselling of Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) will continue till all the seats are filled in NIT/IIT/GFTI/IIITs across the country," said the spokesperson, Indian Express report.
Although the HRD Ministry wishes to conduct rounds of counselling until the seats are filled, the deadline of counselling set by the Supreme Court was August 14.
Information in brief:
The committee constituted by the HRD Ministry will submit its report within three weeks time
As of now, a candidate can reserve a seat at IITs by paying Rs 1 lakh. However, the amount would be refunded if the candidate secure admission in other institutes thus leaving the seat vacant
Another agenda was discussed on Tuesday thus encouraging the students to register again even when the academic session has commenced so that no seats would be left vacant. Source: India today
