Why this petition matters

If polar bears are reclassified under Appendix I of the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), it would mean an end to the commercial international trade of polar bears. Note: According to the National Resources Defence Council, a listing of the polar bear on CITES Appendix I will not affect the ability of native peoples to use polar bears for subsistence purposes. The listing will however, stop the international commercial trade in polar bear pelts and parts, which is greatly threatening their chances of survival.

Canada is the only country in the world where polar bears are hunted for sport and commercial trade purposes. Each year, between 500-600 Canadian polar bears are killed for their fur (and parts) to be sold on the international market. Increasing polar bear trade, coupled with global warming, poses a very real threat to Canada's polar bears.

We are asking Mr. Cameron to support the U.S. and Russia's push for this reclassification and to encourage the rest of the European Union to do the same.
