Introduce Votes at 16 in all UK elections

WHY MUST 16 AND 17 YEAR OLDS GET THE VOTE IN ALL ELECTIONS?

Because:

Once we learn, to listen to young people

We will realise, that they are like mirrors

Reflecting back to us,

What we, the adults,

have done to them.

At the Holyrood Parliament, on the 9th of October 2014, all the political parties agreed, a motion that we should grant voting rights to young people over sixteen, in all future elections, in the UK.

We should all be proud that for decades, Scotland has encouraged young people to take a more active part in the delivery of their own youth services and this this can be seen today through the great work of the Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) and the national youth information charity, Young Scot.

In the Scottish Referendum on 18th of September 2014, all 16 and 17 year olds were for the first time given the right to vote. Of the 120,000 young people who could vote a remarkable 110,000 of them did, as did 85% of all of us who had registered to vote.

The novice, 16-17 year olds voted 52% for NO and 48% for YES.

Democracy was working again. Surely, we must now take that successful process further by agreeing that young people can vote at 16 in all elections.

Here is one important FACT to ponder on:

Scottish university students at the age of 16, can join their Students Unions, which are very large social and leisure facilities and  million pound businesses, social enterprises, run by young people for young people. Yet young people who are not at university, have almost no control over how their local youth clubs and youth organisations are run.  They cannot even decide how many table tennis balls can be bought, or the hours of opening. Why, is it we trust our highly educated youths to run all of their services, yet deny that right to our poorest, least educated youngsters?

In my 50 years of working with young people in Scotland I have  observed that the more deprived the community you live in, THE LESS POWER IS DELEGATED TO YOU. We then wonder why so many of the young people become adults who do not believe there is any point in using the power of the ballot box, because it will solve nothing in their lives. It must be seen as significant that in the referendum those in our most deprived regions and cities voted for YES and got what they have come to expect NO.  Nothing to give them any hope of affecting change in their lives. WE CAN CHANGE THAT. Regardless of how we voted in the referendum we have to work together now to make this happen.

The Scottish Parliament has agreeel to the vote for young people at 16. However the UK Government have made it very clear that they have no plans to alter the voting system, as they say there is no evidence of a demand for it. Young people can help us all to create a more prosperous, fairer and more equal society, if we dare to empower them to do so.

PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO SIGN THIS PETITION TO ENSURE THAT WE CAN DELIVER THE VIEWS OF MILLIONS OF US, ADULT AND YOUTH, TO WESTMINSTER, AND DEMAND THE VOTE FOR ALL OVER SIXTEENS IN THE UK AT ALL FUTURE ELECTIONS.
