Why this petition matters

Started by Jennifer Breslin

In response to The Calorie Labelling (Out of Home Sector) (England) Regulations 2021, we as PRH colleagues make the following requests of the company to support staff wellbeing. As has been raised by the UK’s largest eating disorder charity, these mandatory changes are likely to cause anxiety for people affected by eating disorders and disordered eating.

  • We ask that calorie signage on canteen menu items is removed for items that a) are available for less than 30 consecutive days and b) are available for less than 30 total days in the calendar year, as these do not legally require calorie labelling.

  • We ask that the posters outlining calorie content for drinks machine items, teabags, milk and sugar be removed from the premises as these items have not previously been listed on menus.

  • We ask that the daily calorie intake statement be displayed in a less overt manner. The calorie information under each menu option is much smaller but still clear and legible, so we ask that the daily calorie intake statement be displayed in the same way. There is no legal requirement to make the information so unavoidably bold and in such a large font.

  • We ask that a canteen menu without calorie information under each item be uploaded to the PRH Eats app on a weekly basis. Calorie information is required on a mobile app there that app is used for the sale/ordering of food. Since the PRH Eats app only allows for pre-orders from the cafe, not the canteen, there is no legal reason why a calorie-free menu cannot be provided on the app purely for viewing purposes.

  • We ask that explicit and widely shared comms be issued by the company, acknowledging this new policy and the damaging impact it will have on many employees.

  • We ask that as part of and in addition to the comms requested in point 6, the company provides helpful and tangible resources for employees who are adversely impacted by the new legislation. This might include guidance on how to cope with the change, details of plans (outlined in point 4) to provide calorie-free menus on the PRH Eats app, a designated contact point for colleagues struggling with the new legislation, and links to other helpful resources from external organisations (for example BEAT, the leading eating disorder charity).
