The deaths of innocent victims are on the rise due to the stand your ground law being used to protect murderers.
    My dad happened to be one of those victims. He entered a home for a woman who was in danger. Her husband had a loaded gun to her head with intent to kill his own wife. My father was NOT armed and he showed NO threat. But he was shot and killed for trying to save someone else’s life. The man that killed him is trying to use stand your ground as his reasoning. The stand your ground law provides that people may use deadly force when they reasonably believe it to be necessary to defend against deadly force, great bodily harm, kidnapping, rape, robbery, etc.
    This is where the problem lies. If someone is walking down the street and a woman or anyone is being attacked and someone goes up to help without showing any threat to the attacker and they are simply just helping the victim and then they get killed that should NOT be able to cover the defendant on self defense or stand your ground.
    Any defendant who claims self defense or stand your ground admits that they used violence against the victim but they assert that they did so because the “victim” was actually the attacker and they had to avoid being hurt themselves. The main issue lies whether the defendants response was actually necessary and proportionate to the threat posed if and any  threat at all.
     Too many innocent lives are being taken trying to save others and they are not getting the justice they  deserve because of this stand your ground law protecting people who use it for unjust purposes.

    This petition is to ask that there be a review and amendment added to this stand your ground law to protect these victims and so that they can be served the justice they deserve and to keep these people from being able to get away with murder. We do support stand your ground law, but we want to assure it can no longer be used for unjust purposes. We are and will continue to fight for my fathers justice and we hope that a law can be put in to place so that this doesn’t have to happen to anymore families.
