Stop construction of a substation in the middle of a rural residential community

The Issue

We are opposed to the construction of a large substation in the middle of our rural residential community in Fruitvale, BC.

  • The 10 acre site is on a well-established 80 year old farm.
  • The farm has an underground irrigation network that is fed by a well
  • The farmland is within the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary and is zoned as Rural Residential 1.
  • The farm is an active wildlife corridor, has a natural spring fed pond, has 4 acres of mature forest that provides shelter and habitat for the wildlife which includes woodpeckers, owls, deer, bear, skunk, racoon, coyotes, water fowl, and other nesting birds.
  • This historic farm is not appropriate for FortisBC's large scale industrial substation.
  • The local ecosystem and wildlife shelter will be lost
  • Property values will decline.
  • 24-7 noise pollution will disturb human and wildlife populations.
  • It is not necessary for this multi billion dollar corporation to disrupt the character, natural beauty and rural lifestyle of the community.
  • There are other locations that were actively being examined before this farmland was listed for sale

In light of these concerns and the negative impacts,  we strongly urge you to sign the petition in support of moving this project to a location that will have less of an impact on the human and wildlife population.

Thank you
