Finn Bell started this petition to UK Parliament and

The fashion industry is globally damaging and it is extremely worrying to see items selling for as little as 5p in the UK. If a deal seems too good to be true... Ask why? There is always a cost.

What's the issue?

Your £1 dress cost keeps people in poverty and accelerates environmental degradation.

During Black Friday this year, the online fashion company Boohoo (and its subsidiaries) had a number of sale items for less than 5p.

You may think that if the clothing is produced in the UK the worker will at least be paid a living wage. WRONG.

  • Evidence presented by the EAC (Environmental Audit Committee) to government ministers highlighted some workers being paid as little as £3 an hour. If that was your mother, father, or friend, would you be okay with that?
  • The factories in the UK are not unionised, nor are many inspected.
  • The materials used are often cheap polyester that contributes to microplastics that end up in your food.

Fast fashion is NOT sustainable, this is not an issue for just environmentalists, your future is on the line.

What can be done about it?

The Environmental Audit Committee was rejected by government ministers when proposing recommendations for tackling abuses across the industry.

We ask that the government sets out a policy for fast fashion companies to

  1. Prevent clothing from being sold for less than £1
  2. Pay all employees a living wage
  3. Stop marketing '99% off' sales to audiences under 16 through social media

Why should I care?

  • The textile industry creates 1.2bn tonnes of CO2 a year, the same as the entire aviation industry. This is preventable.
  • 1.3 million tonnes of clothing waste is produced each year in the UK alone.

Even if you shop second hand there are ~5 million UK customers per year on Boohoo alone. Around 25% of its target market use it each year, with 11% of 18-24-year-olds having purchased something from Boohoo in the previous 3 months.

Which brands are in Boohoo Group PLC?

  • PrettyLittleThing
  • Nasty Gal
  • MissPap
  • Karen Millen
  • Oasis
  • Warehouse
  • Coast
  • BoohooMAN

These brands might supply cheap clothes but they come at a cost

Those are just a few of at least 100 major fast fashion brands operating in the UK. You do the maths.

Let's increase the pressure on the government to stop turning a blind eye to their own citizen's human rights and the ethical obligation to prevent environmental harm.

-We are aware that some items are 'loss leaders' in which they are purposely sold at a loss under the presumption that customers would then buy other items in the store leading to an overall profit.-
