Pressure tech companies to allow a user-selected, spectrum-based emoji skin tone default
Why this petition matters
Currently, the default emoji skin tone is best suited for users with a lighter skin tone, which alienates and effectively erases the existence and identity darker-skinned users and creators.
This petition is to pressure the Unicode Consortium and tech companies like Apple, Meta, and Alphabet to allow for users to set their preferred skin tone for the emojis they search and use, to remove the current yellow emoji default that is no longer "racially neutral" and mainly of benefit to users with lighter skin tones.
However, even this has the effect of erasing the identity of users with skin tones that do not fit neatly into the five race categories (plus yellow) presented as alternate choices and it is a consistent microaggression that millions of users face multiple times a day whenever they choose to express themselves using emojis.
Apple, Meta, Alphabet, work with the Unicode Consortium to implement a spectrum-based emoji skin tone color selector option.
