this is very important. There are alot of people who can't even take off to go to a doctor because they are scared of losing their jobs.

This is important to all families headed by one adult. All families need a social support network to act like responsible caring human beings.

I have this but know many people who do not and usually they are the ones who most need it. Our society still thinks in terms of a two parent, fully employed family but that is not the reality for many.

Because economies should work for people, not the other way around.

I was fortunate to work for a company that provided these kinds of benefits. I want the same to hold true for those not as fortunate as I was.

Paid Sick Leave and maternity leave make sense. You can't leave a helpless 6 week infant that requires breast feeding every 2 hours, in a daycare that costs almost as much as you make at your job and then take 20 minute breaks every 2 hours to pump breast milk for that infant. Private sector is not very receptive to this part of human nature.

I am from Europe and I live in the US. I just had a baby. All of my friends in Europe are shocked by the lack of support new moms get here. Maternity leaves should be paid and long enough for a woman to feel that her baby is safe if she goes back to work. It is in our best interest to encourage women to work, rather than force them to stay at home. Working mothers pay taxes. We contribute. We matter.
