Why this petition matters

Every year, floods devastate hundreds of thousands, even millions of Nigerian families. Forcing them to abandon their homes and means of livelihood, swallowing their loved ones and wreaking havoc on communal infrastructure. This year alone, floods have displaced 1.4 million Nigerians and taken the lives of over 600. People and homes are submerges in Kogi, Anambra, Bauchi, Gimbe and Bayelsa. These are the people paying the price for the gross incompetence and negligence of their political leaders.

Every year, the Nigerian people send out innumerable appeals to their leaders. Every year, they are largely ignored and the cycle continues.

This had to stop!

Nigeria has come to the head of another election cycle. And some of the presidential aspirants have commented on their plans for the country's economic and political trajectory as documented in their manifestos. Yet none have made any strong commitments concerning the ravaging annual floods, offered any solid policy initiatives to prevent these immense yet sometimes preventable floods from devastating Nigerians.

This petition is a call to Nigerians to hold their aspiring political leaders to better standards. We need to know how they plan to address the issue of the current floods whose effects will surely carry on to the election year, whose victims will nurse wounds that may last a lifetime.

We need to know what commitments they are willing to make to ensure these disasters are prevented or properly managed and affected people are compensated. and how they intend to go about these.
