On March 23, 2020, the University of Houston – Clear Lake (UHCL) made the reasonable decision to transition all classes online due to the COVID-19 global pandemic crisis. UHCL has extended online classes through the summer semester. While this was necessary to ensure the health and safety of students and staff, UHCL’s tuition and fees do not accurately reflect the value lost by switching to an online format. Many students have been financially impacted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and are struggling to maintain their educational goals. For these reasons, we are seeking reduced tuition or partial refund for Summer 2020.

UHCL has done an excellent job transitioning education to an online format; however, despite the university’s best efforts, students are not receiving the same level of instruction and support. Students no longer have access to invaluable face-to-face interaction with faculty, resources necessary for specific programs, and access to facilities that enable learning.

UHCL has a diverse population of students from many different socioeconomic backgrounds. Many students have lost their jobs, been furloughed, or have reduced hours, which has created a financial burden for them and their families. By reducing tuition, UHCL can help mitigate some of this burden.

With this in mind, we call upon UHCL to address the reduction of educational quality that the transition to online classes represents, as well as the limited resources available to students by providing reduced tuition or partial refund for Summer 2020.

Go Hawks!
