Detailed Reopening Plan from Lehigh University

Dear President Simon and the Board of Trustees,

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all members of the Lehigh community. Students moved out mid-semester. Faculty transitioned to online classes. Parents and guardians adjusted to their children living at home again. As a nation, we are dealing with the devastating effects of this virus. Millions have lost their jobs and face daily economic uncertainty. We miss being able to see our friends. Most tragically, we have lost loved ones.

To say these are uncertain times is an understatement. This once in a lifetime event has permanently affected all of us. We are uncertain about the future and when things will return back to normal. In these uncertain times, our institutions have a responsibility to provide transparency and detailed information as decisions are made. Lehigh University has failed to provide a comprehensive reopening plan.

Therefore, we the undersigned demand that Lehigh University release:

  • A detailed move in plan that specifically addresses: when exactly will students move in, how will students be kept safe, how the university will manage students that are required to self-quarantine for two weeks by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and what the testing protocol is upon return to campus.
  • A detailed plan for how often students will be tested for COVID-19.
  • The protocol for when a student tests positive. Specifically: where they will sleep, how they will get food and how they will manage coursework.
  • Seating plans for classrooms.
  • The metrics that will be used to determine if we must transition to entirely online learning.
  • The cleaning protocol for all buildings on campus.

We are less than six weeks from the start of the semester. We still do not have clear and detailed picture of what it will look like. This must change for our physical health, mental health and safety.
