As Ithaca College has abruptly decided to close the college and switch to remote classes at the last possible moment, the student body is demanding a reduction of tuition for the fall of 2020, refunds on all parking passes purchased, and free shipment of belongings back to students who shipped items to the school.

The quality of education via online learning is drastically lower than what students would receive on campus. Additionally, by switching to remote learning, students lose access to on-campus amenities that are covered by tuition. For example, students are still being expected to pay for access to the fitness center, the library, the writing center, practice rooms, camera/television equipment rental, hands-on labs, and so much more, though they won’t actually have access to any of it for the entirety of the semester.

Additionally, in weeks leading up to the closing, students were encouraged to purchase parking passes and pay to ship their belongings to campus. We expect a full refund for all parking passes purchased for the fall of 2020. The college should—at the very least—cover shipping to reunite students with their previously shipped items, and ideally refund their original shipping prices.

In a time of such catastrophic change and loss, expecting students to be prepared with their full cost of tuition shows and utter lack of empathy from Ithaca College. For a college that so heavily advocates for a “campus community,” the lack of acknowledgement and reparations for the aspects of the campus that students are losing—but still paying for—is shocking. While President Collado continues to make a salary upwards of $350,000, students are left scraping together whatever money they can in one of the worst economic climates in United States history.

The financial burden Ithaca College will be placing on their students if they do not reduce tuition is greater than any staff member, president, or board of trustee member could fathom. Show that you actually care about your students by reducing tuition and providing adequate refunds.
