In the United States, we have a long standing deep racial divide that is largely due to slavery in America and a lack of history being accurately taught in schools. I have learned more about racial history in America online as an adult than I was ever taught in school as a child. I feel strongly that if children are taught about the Genocide of Native Americans, The Trans Altantic Slave Trade, the Civil War, and Jim Crow Laws etc and how our history affects us now, we can become a less divided nation. It will create understanding, empathy and compassion for others. We need to better understand how white supremacy and privilege manifest itself and impacts others and what we can do to abolish both and create a level playing field.

There is so much about our past in the U.S. that is only glossed over and hardly discussed. We have to know our history, no matter how hard or ugly it is so that we never repeat it. We have to understand where we came from so that we can understand how we got where we are now. If white children are taught about how Black Americans were treated during slavery and the Jim Crow Era, maybe they will know better than to say "get over it". If children are taught about other cultures, maybe they will be interested in different cultures rather than fearing people who are different than them. We have a problem when a portion of our society is angry when someone speaks a language other than their own. We are of many different backgrounds and ethnicities in America, WE are not just white and english speaking. We need to learn to live together peacefully and the best way to do this is through education, starting in middle school if not earlier. We owe it to all the people who have suffered through discrimination in the past and to the next generation of Americans so that we can be a strong, unified country!!! The truth is that America has not always been great, at least not for everyone but THIS is how we can FINALLY make it great!!
