This petition will be presented to UEA, President and Board of Directors, demanding that they act on behalf of the membership, and fight for issues and concerns affecting the lives of their members. Such concerns are 1.) failure to engage members in relevant issues, 2.) failure to communicate on a regular basis 3.) failure to fight to reclaim our stolen Christmas Vacation Days, and 4.) failure to openly support a Superintendent chosen by the members. Other areas of concern involve the curriculum, insurance, the closing of schools, and the negotiation of a new MOU contract.
UEA, United Education Association was founded a little over 2 years ago after a bitter and public split from its former union M-SCEA. The creation of the union that night in Bartlett was very special because there was electrifying energy in the air, optimism, and the room was filled with hope at the possibility of what could be. Unfortunately, that has since given way to passivity, silence, and the promise of what could be, has turned into more of the same. We members, who followed UEA and flocked to join thought we were going to be on the ground floor of change, of something new, and we were confident that this union was going to fight for us. Sadly, that has not been the case; in fact, just the opposite has taken place under the UEA leadership, because educators’ workloads have increased, insurance has increased vacation days have decreased, and teachers feel more undervalued and unappreciated than ever before. Schools are closing all around us, and morale throughout the District is low.
Members want action and change. Change comes when action is present, and action occurs when members are engaged. UEA, engage your members because there is Strength in our Numbers, Numbers will bring us Power, and Power will bring us Change. Members want Action and Change; thus, we expect our leadership to represent us in accordance to most of the membership wishes, or risk losing members, titles, board seats, or maybe even the dissolution of UEA itself.
