The dredging activities as a solution to flooding is a disguise and deception to the real intent of extracting black sand in the coastal areas of Negros Occidental, particularly in the Municipality of E. B. Magalona.

The lives and livelihoods of our coastal communities depend on the coastal ecosystem, which is being threatened by black sand mining! The black sand mining operations disturb the coastal marine ecosystem. The volume of extracted mineral deposits contributes to the depletion of fishery resources such as the blue crabs due to the decrease of the amount of sediments supply which serves as their habitat, breeding ground, and food supply. It also results in significant loss of shoreline due to coastal erosion and lowering of the water table. These would result in seawater intrusion to the inland that would create flooding during high tide. Due to the lowering of the water table, the saline water will intrude and eventually contaminate the fresh water supply.

We affix our signature to agree to the continued operations of black sand mining in Negros island with the conditions that the government and the operators of the black sand mining will compensate the communities and the people that depend on their livelihoods from the coastal marine ecosystem of Negros Occidental. It includes those involved in the supply and value chain of coastal products, such as the tricycle driver transporting coastal resources such as fish and the like. They will be paid based on their income every month with compounding inflation based on real-time valuation, starting today until they die so that they can support their children, and children's children, and all the next generations to come.
