Demand Divestment from Private Prisons-- University of Arizona
The University of Arizona currently invests in the two largest private prison corporations--CoreCivic and The Geo Group. Private prisons are a BILLION dollar industry that profit off of the marginalization and criminalization of poor and communities of color.
In Arizona, the highest minimum occupancy clause exists. Meaning, 95-100% of the beds must be filled--incentivizing incarceration. Private prisons are extremely dangerous because they cut costs to increase their profit by having these prisons understaffed and not up to health and safety standards that are required of state and federal prisons.
We must demand that the University of Arizona stop perpetuating the marginalization and criminalization of poor and communities of color and DEMAND that the University divest from private prison stocks.
