The signing and passing of the human trafficking act
0 have signed. Let’s get to 100!
Human trafficking is an issue that affects about "20.9 millions" (polarisproject.org) people on a global scale and "Between 14,500 and 17,500 people are trafficked into the U.S. each year."(dosomething.org).
It is an important issue that is often overlooked and undermined. The passing of the TVPA of 2000 was a major win in the fight against human trafficking, due to the fact that it defined what human trafficking. "The Act authorized the establishment of the State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons and the President’s Inter agency Task Force to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons to assist in the coordination of anti-trafficking efforts." (state.gov).
Although progress have been made since the passing of the TVPA, there is still more that can be done, such as passing and signing the Abolishing Human Trafficking Act because it would be complementary to the TVPA. It will institute training laws/rules within the agencies in charge of Human trafficking affairs and implement harsher punishment against the perpetrators of this crime.
Therefore it is important to spread the awareness about the issue and the Act in order to show people a way they can help in this fight against modern day slavery.
