Why this petition matters

Started by Melissa Marie

Many students who attended college in the past decade have tens of thousands of dollars in debt. As a teacher, I know educators like myself who owe $80,000 with interest to qualify for teaching licenses. First-generation medical students cannot start families, crushed by the burden of more than $200,000 in debt. The economy WILL be stimulated if people with student loans can invest in homes and start families.

Student loan debt in the United States totals $1.68 trillion and grows over 6 times faster than the nation's economy. 44.7 million student borrowers are in debt by an average of $37,584 each. The 42.3 million Americans with federal student loan debt each owe an average of $36,520 for their federal loans.

Our government has bailed out big banks - it's time to bail out the people who fell victim to predatory loans and inequitable access to education. Higher education should NOT equal modern-day indentured servitude.
