Ashley Franke started this petition to President of the United States and

Are you considered disabled by the American government? Do you earn SSI and/or Medicaid? Is your income limited because of these programs? Do you have to limit your work hours just to keep your insurance?

If this sounds like your situation and you’re as tired of it as I am, let’s start to make a change together.

Did you know the average cost of living these days is between $1,000 and $1,500? This includes rent/mortgage and basic utility costs. This does not include anything “extra” such as food, streaming services, student loans, and anything else such as a night out, hobby related activities, or a social event.

I don’t know about you, but this is not the quality of life I want to live. I don’t want to scrape by each month just because I have the fear of my insurance getting taken away. Abled bodied people (or ABP) don’t have to worry about this. They can work as much as they want/need to, they can buy a house or a car, they can make investments, they can get married – all without worrying about losing their insurance.

As the American government, you’re telling us just because we are different, we can’t have the things and experiences as ABP without getting punished? This sounds like discrimination. I was to believe the government wanted everyone to contribute to the economy, not just some. If you can work, do you think it’s fair being told you can only work so much? I know not all of us can work and that’s okay, but for those who can and want to, why are we being discriminated against?

$2,000 is not enough to live on these days and hasn’t been enough for 20 years. The government needs to stop forcing disabled individuals into poverty and have insurance cover our needs, no matter how much money we make. Allow us to get married if we choose, buy a house or a car, play the stock market, and live as freely as ABP. That’s what America is about, right? The freedom of choice? Let disabled individuals have a choice in their lifestyle.

We didn’t choose to have a disability, but we can choose how we live with it. If you want to make a change in the way you live, please sign this petition to make your voice heard.
