Stop media from promoting mass shootings by not naming perpetrator(s) publicly.
Enough is enough! I’m starting this petition as a concerned and confused parent. First, my heartfelt condolences to all the victims and their family’s affected by the tragedy at Oxford High School in Oxford, Michigan. Since we live about 25 minutes from there, and as the father of a scared 13 year old girl, I felt I had to do something. I have complete heartbreak for these children nowadays and the thoughts that go through their head as they enter what was supposedly a safe zone.
After doing some basic research, I found a study on the NIH’s( National Institute of Health) website, among dozens of others, which blame the general media for contributing, even exacerbating the problem. It’s called “General Imitation”, or basically “copycats”. The United States of America is one of the only countries in the free world that actually allow the media to name the perpetrator(s) of mass shootings/crimes. The UK and most of the EU(European Union) don’t allow the media to do it. A quick search on the Internet can show dozens and dozens of studies, papers and even interviews with perpetrators proving/admitting they commit mass crimes/casualties/shootings to live in infamy. I believe the stories should be covered in detail to the best of our abilities, but 100% of public focus should be on what happened and the victims, not the perpetrator(s). I am a proud American and do not believe in censorship. I don’t see this as censorship. I see it as a common sense solution to a public health crisis.
