Elizabeth Cantor's son Derek was born with a rare muscle cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma. His pediatrician and oncologists recommended hospice because conventional chemotherapy wouldn't work. He didn't qualify for trials due to his size and age. The tumors spread extremely fast and ate away at his jawbone, which caused his baby teeth to fall out. The tumors invaded his airway and he suffered so much from the head to toe that simply holding him caused excruciating pain. Derek passed away in his sleep on April 23, 2017 at the tender age of 5 months. I beseech you on Elizabeth’s behalf to please use your voice and resources to help make her baby’s suffering and death meaningful.
Cancer is the number one cause of death by disease among all children in the United States, yet only 4% of federal government cancer research funding goes to pediatric cancer research. Despite cancer being the number one cause of death for children by disease, fewer than 10 drugs have been developed for children with cancer buts hundreds have been developed for adults. This needs to change!
