While most of us view Olympic athletes as larger than life figures, it turns out that most of them are unable to easily support themselves. Some have to take part-time jobs in order to keep being able to afford equipment and other athletic necessities to compete. For this reason, I have created this petition in order to gain awareness of this issue and hopefully bring change through governmental action. Small steps have been made, but not enough large scale actions have been taken to support athletes.

Olympic athletes do make money winning medals, though this amount can be considered insignificant in relation to costs of training and such stretched over a period of 4 years. In addition to this, most athletes in more niche sports, such as rowing and fencing are unable to garner many sponsors due to the small audience of their sport. Ideally, a governmental program could be put in place to help support these athletes and any potential athletes looking to compete in the Olympics.

By doing this, we would be helping to ensure that the people we send to represent our country to the world are able to have what equipment and training they need without any thoughts of financial burden on their mind. We would help our country and athletes represent the best of us.
