John Doe started this petition to President of the United States and

"United we stand" is a phrase deeply rooted in American history. This founding principle of unity is worthy of preserving, celebrating, and promoting through a nationally-recognized holiday. Make "Serve Day" a national holiday to promote unity in our country.

"Serve Day" would be a day dedicated to helping other people. Every person from every socioeconomic status, culture, and background can be a part of "Serve Day" by simply doing something kind for someone else. Helping each other brings us closer together. When we help someone who is different than we are, we gain a better understanding of that person's perspective, and our empathy for that person grows. But not only do we feel closer to the people we help, they also feel closer to us. In a time where many feel isolated and alone, this connection could have the potential to make a significant impact in someone's life. Serving others allows us to meet new people and connect with others in our community. Most importantly, kind acts multiply. Doing something kind for someone often has such an impact on that person that they want to spread the kindness. Serving others creates a sense of belonging for everyone. It creates unity.

If you want to know what "Serve Day" has the potential to look like, imagine a nation-wide holiday that people anticipate. Imagine people gathering in groups weeks in advance to think of new and creative ways to help other people. Imagine children being excited to think of how they can help someone. Imagine people from different backgrounds meeting and engaging in conversations that might not have occurred otherwise. New friendships would be created. People would have a better understanding of each other. There would be unity.

The principle of unity that America was founded on is worthy of preserving, celebrating, and promoting. Having a day dedicated to serving others has the potential to create true unity.

Begin here by recognizing "Serve Day." Begin here for your children and grandchildren. Beginning here has the potential to have lasting effects that live far beyond any of us. Choose to promote unity and make "Serve Day" a national holiday.
