Being a citizen of the United States of America means that we all have the equal opportunity to voice our opinions and promote change. The federal government continues to classify marijuana as a Schedule I drug (the substance has a high potential for abuse) and prohibits the use and sell of it. However, a few states are now in the process of legalizing the use of marijuana. The evolution of the legalization of marijuana stems from California being the first state to authorize the use of medical marijuana influencing the legal sales and normalization in some states. The legalization of marijuana will demonstrate a new frontier of marketing challenges and beneficial research possibilities. In January of 2018 the Trump administration reversed Obamas use of marijuana guidelines and terminated programs and therapies put in place for medical use of marijuana. However, the states that had already legalized the use of marijuana for medical and recreational purposes were profiting tremendously. According to Colorado department of revenue, from February of 2014 to November of 2019, the state received around 1 billion in total revenue from sales tax, licenses, and fees with receiving almost 200 million annually. Marijuana is considered a Scheduled I drug based off of three different criteria's. The first criteria, "it has no medical validity". Before the prohibition of marijuana was enacted, marijuana was available to purchase from pharmacies to help with pain, nausea, and discomfort between the 1840's and early 1900's. Dr. Sir William O'shaughnessy introduced marijuana to western medicine after various years of scientific research. The second criteria, "high potential for addiction and abuse." However, alcohol and the use of tobacco is legalized throughout the United States with higher rates of addiction and abuse. According to the CDC, in 2019 more than 480,000 people died from the addiction of tobacco use. Lastly, "marijuana cannot be safely researched." The FDA has the power to approve or deny if a drug can be used based off its safety, effectiveness, and quality. Marijuana has impacted people's lives greatly over the years. Sign this petition to have the Constitution amended to legalize marijuana!
