WASHINGTON DC BORN BLACK AMERICAN FARMERS RESIDING IN ECUADOR: EXTORTED FOR $1 MILLION, OR FACE 34 YEARS IN PRISON FOR DOUBLE HOMICIDE WITH NO EVIDENCE

28 year old Roja (John) Stephenson and his brother Ronell (Tony) Stephenson (38) are currently awaiting for the approval of a Revision Trial in an unsafe Ecuador prison. Their judicial and human rights have been violated. They were being extorted for $1 million dollars and ownership of Roja’s 125 acre farm in lieu of being falsely accused for double homicide by the father of one of the victims.

The brothers also faced firearm charges for 2 antique guns. They won the gun case because the panel of 3 Judges determined that the 2 guns were incapable of being discharged, therefore the guns couldn’t be classified as firearms.

The brothers were also charged with a low-level marijuana offence. Roja and Ronell initially won the marijuana case because it was ruled that the amount of marijuana was only enough to be considered personal use and not distribution.  After the  pressure from the intimidating, influential and extorting victim’s father, the Prosecutor appealed the gun case. Neither Roja nor Ronell were allowed to be present at the appeal hearing. The panel of 3 Judges (with no new evidence) changed the decision from innocent to guilty and sentenced the brothers to 8 years in an Ecuador prison that is overrun with gang wars.

Then there is the double homicide case that the Prosecutor brought forward due to the pressure from the extorting victim’s father. The victims father sent his attorney to visit Roja and Ronell in prison and delivered a message from his client. He said, "This can all go away if you give him $1 million dollars". The brothers continued to declare their innocence and refused the extortion. With no evidence, both Roja and Ronell were initially convicted and sentenced to 24 years. The Prosecutor, with further pressure from the victims father, filed an appeal in this case as well. An appeal hearing took place just as before, without Roja and Ronell being present. The brother's attorney was given ONLY 5 mins to speak on their behalf.  The 3 panel Judges increased their sentence from 24 to 34 years. This is the highest sentence that anyone has received for a similar crime in that region year to-date. One of the Judges asked; “What are 2 Americans doing living in Ecuador?”

The details are far more extenuating than what could possibly be written. (Please see the interview for a more in depth view of the human and judicial right’s violations that these young men face). Roja simply wanted to live an environmentally friendly life in South American while maintaining his citizenship here in the U.S. He wanted to create a destination location for his family, friends and tourist yet, his dream has turned into a 4 year long nightmare for he and his brother.

Roja and Ronell are in need of our help. They are in need of an emergency Hearing. They need to have access to DNA testing and an examination of the witness testimony which will prove their innocence. Their story needs to be heard by the American and International political influencers so that they can receive justice. Roja and Ronell simple wants to return home to the U.S and with your signature on this petition, they will have a chance to do so.
