As healthcare workers on the front lines of the COVID19 pandemic, we are doing the opposite of what the rest of the country is advised to do. We are not staying home, but instead we are going to work each day and getting up close and personal with many patients who are sick with COVID19 - and often times without the personal protective equipment required to do the job efficiently and safely. This is ultimately not only putting our own health at risk, but also the health of our families, coworkers, and other patients we care for. Healthcare workers should not be sacrificed during this pandemic, but respected and taken care of - so that we can continue to fight it. While many companies are stepping up and giving their workers paid time off, hazard pay, and benefits to get through the pandemic, many hospitals are cutting budgets and making healthcare workers use their own PTO to take time off after getting sick doing the job most are not willing to take on. I call on the U.S. government to put in place a bill that REQUIRES all U.S. hospitals to compensate their frontline healthcare workers with hazard pay, as well as pay them for the time off they have to take when becoming sick themselves. Provide a specific bailout payout to hospitals for this budget if needed. It should not take a petition for us to receive hazard pay, it should have been done long ago. Healthcare workers are putting others first right now - as they always do. We signed up to care for others, but getting sick ourselves and even dying on the frontlines was NEVER in the job description. For that, the LEAST that can be done is to compensate healthcare workers for the sacrifice they are giving to protect the people of this country.
