Elvis Williams started this petition to President of the United States and

They say it takes a village to raise a child.  Here’s Michael and his niece  and he’s been locked up her entire life for a $1,000 worth of drugs and gun charges which are non-violent crimes. I’m making note of this because taking a man away from his family affects the entire family.  Michael has been locked up for 18 years and have 18 more to go.  He’ll be 57 years old when they decide to release him!!!! What kind of life will he have at that age, what can he contribute to society at that age and how can he possibly provide for himself and his family adequately because so much time has been taken away from his life!!!  This is cruel and unusual punishment and we are letting not only Michael but millions of people down by allowing this to happen.

Michael story is a common one where the system took advantage of his youth and lack of knowledge of the law. Many people that grow up in the conditions that Michael did, find themselves trying to provide for their families by hustling.  That has been a cycle for decades and still till this day is going very strong in the black community.

Michael wasn’t physically caught with any drugs, but was charged with Constructive Possession.  This means that the drugs was in the same area as Michael but not directly connected to him. Having found a minuscule amount of drugs, they pressured and threatened him with time in order to catch a bigger drug dealer…. In essence, they wanted him to snitch on somebody that he had no connection with.   Again, being young and having in-adequate council made it hard for Michael to have his fair day in court. There were so many issues with his case where he thought his lawyer should have raised at trail.  Even when he filed a complaint against his lawyer, the court paid it no attention.

If we are to change the dynamics and relationship this country have with people of color, then we as a country have to start taking every aspect of a person life into consideration when handing down punishment or rehabilitation. The sentencing guidelines have to change!!!! Digging up your past has nothing to do with the crime your charge with in the present.  This should be unconstitutional and illegal.  America there has to be a better way!!!!!
