Solitary confinement is described as the isolation of a prisoner in a separate cell as a punishment. This includes complete seclusion for twenty-two to twenty-four hours a day. A typical solitary confinement cell is composed of solid brick, measures six by eight feet, lacks windows and adequate ventilation, and is sealed shut by a metal door. The cell’s composition causes extreme temperatures that are not suitable for living. Temperatures can exceed one hundred degrees during the summer and reach as low as forty-five degrees during the winter. Furthermore, solitary confinement restricts prisoners from access to rehabilitation and educational resources. While the time spent in solitary confinement varies from case to case, some prisoners can spend months or even years in there. There are over 80,000 men, women, and youth in solitary confinement today which can have damaging effects on their overall health. People who have been subject to time in solitary confinement report having increased anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, vision loss, and other chronic ailments. In some cases, people who came out of solitary confinement were virtually unrecognizable. These physical and mental ailments that arise due to solitary confinement are exceedingly harmful. These people are already in prison, therefore, further punishing them to a point where they lose their ability to live life like a human being is completely unjust. The United States should discontinue solitary confinement as a rehabilitation tool in prisons as it is a cruel and unusual punishment.
