Clemency for John Holt

Clemency for John Holt
Until now, John Holt has never been to prison. John is a 66-year-old grandfather of seven and father of five. He's serving what is quite likely a de facto life sentence, 30 years in federal prison, for a nonviolent drug offense.
At the sentencing phase, Judge McBryde (in Fort Worth, Texas) pinned $7.5 million in ghost dope on John—the same John Holt who lived in a dilapidated 1978 camper that he bought for $600. John was hardly a drug kingpin. In fact, at his trial government agents testified that when they tried to wire tap John's phone, it was turned off for "nonpayment.
John has been in prison for nearly 14 years. He has suffered serious health issues that almost killed him. Additionally, he has invested his time in prison in rehabilitation, completing a litany of classes, including working as a suicide companion. What's more, he has a spotless disciplinary record.
John has served enough time. It is cruel and purely punitive to make a grandfather of seven and father of five, who has never been to prison and who has no felony convictions, die in federal prison for his role as a grunt in a nonviolent drug offense.
