An invisible disability is one that is not obvious to the naked eye, such as ADHD, Autism, Tourette’s, Fibromyalgia, Blindness, Deafness, Multiple Sclerosis, etc. Because they can’t usually be seen, these disabilities can make it harder for the person living with them to access services they need (disabled toilets, disabled parking, a seat on the bus) without someone giving them a hard time about it, if at all.

A group of people in Europe made it just a little easier for folks with invisible disabilities to go about their lives by inventing a system called The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard. In Europe, if someone is wearing a lanyard with this specific sunflower on it, it signals to the people around them that they may need a little extra help. It lets airport workers know that they might move slower than others; It lets public transport workers know that they need that last seat on the bus just as much as the old lady; And it lets the barista know that they may not be able to hear them clearly.

This system has worked wonderfully in Europe, and I believe it could work just as well in the United States. I for one also have invisible disabilities, and there have been times where I’ve gotten weird looks coming out of the disabled stall in the bathroom, or walking out of my car parked in the disabled spot. If I had a Sunflower Lanyard, I might be able to go about my life without getting stares, as would lots of other people in the US living with an invisible disability (that’s 10% of people living in the US to be exact). So please, consider signing to bring The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard Project to the US.
