On January 6th 2021 the US Capitol building was assaulted by insurrectionists with the stated goals of finding, capturing, and killing members of the United States Congress, and preventing the certification of Electoral College results confirming Joseph Biden's election as the 46th President of the USA.

Vastly outnumbered, unprepared by their own command and denied support by nearby Federal forces, the Capitol's defenders were forced back into the building until the attackers reached the barricaded doors of the Speaker's Lobby.

Confronted with insurrectionists breaking in the lobby windows and doors, a single Capitol Police officer - whose identity has not yet been released - fired at the first attacker to breach the window, successfully breaking the momentum of the attack and buying time for the arrival of reinforcements.

For his restraint in the face of a numerically superior attacking force and his skill and effectiveness in defending the very heart of American Democracy, we propose that this officer - when his identity becomes known - be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his crucial role in protecting the Capitol from further intrusion and its occupants from further threats of battery, and death, in the finest tradition of American law enforcement.
