Allow Innocent Exonerees to Collect Earned Disability for PTSD
0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!
Please sign requesting the President and Members of Congress to add simple verbiage allowing an exception to the 'years worked' SSA Disability requirement - for those wrongly imprisoned then living with PTSD.
This petition is only asking for what these brave and innocent Americans worked for and deserve.
Wrongfully convicted Americans cannot collect SSA disability because a rule that requires they worked five of the last 10 years - DESPITE having been wrongfully imprisoned during that time!
The vast majority of exonerees have PTSD due to the countless traumas involved is such injustice. (Here is a great Q&A on the subject.)
Many exonerees did receive financial compensation. However, because they were very unwell with PTSD and lacked financial expertise after their exoneration, they often were taken advantage of by others and left with little to nothing of those funds.
Still, most paid FICA for decades and cannot collect a dime of the disability compensation they are entitled to receive, and that is unfair, unjust and a disgrace.
