Letter to
President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev
Presidential Palace
Baku, Azerbaijan

Dear Mr. President,

On May 18, 2011, Bakhtiyar Hajiyev was convicted of evading military service and sentenced to two years in prison. The Supreme Court recently upheld this sentence, leaving Mr. Hajiyev with no other means of appeal.

Since Mr. Hajiyev’s arrest, his friends and colleagues at Harvard’s Kennedy School in the United States have vigorously supported Mr. Hajiyev’s release. We consider Mr. Hajiyev a kind and dedicated public servant, committed to making the world a better place.

The international community has also called for Mr. Hajiyev’s immediate release. Amnesty International considers Mr. Hajiyev a prisoner of conscience, imprisoned solely for the peaceful expression of his views.

We, the undersigned, join in calling for prompt action taken by your administration to immediately release Bakhtiyar from prison.

Sincerely,
