Corruption affects every Nigerian citizen daily. It is seen when you visit hospitals and can't access basic treatment due to lack of medical equipment or felt when young girls and boys are denied quality basic education for lack of facilities.
Some of the funds meant for these services are appropriated for and released to ministries, departments and agencies of government annually but they are mostly utilized inefficiently or misappropriated deliberately by public officials and/or contractors as often discovered by auditors.
Auditor-General for the Federation presents his annual report to the National Assembly every year but Legislators are yet to consider any of the reports since 2012. Analysis of 2012 – 2015 performance audit carried out by PLSI indicated nothing less than 287billion Naira, 40million Dollars and 196 thousand Euro being funds unaccounted for in 50 ministries, departments and agencies of government through 318 projects located in over 350 communities.
If these reports are not considered as required by law, Parliament cannot make recommendations for the Executive to implement. This means huge funds meant for developmental projects in health, education, water and infrastructure in your local community will remain abandoned and uncompleted. In other words, you and other community residents will continue to suffer avoidable consequences due to lack of these social amenities.
