Why this petition matters

Started by RESTORE Muskegon

The purpose of this petition is to demand that racial justice and Black history become core curriculum in grades K-12.  The current curriculum on these topics is typically only taught during Black History month and is not sufficient. Teaching kids about racial justice starting at a young age is a crucial piece in ending systemic racism. This must go beyond talking about slavery and the Civil Rights Movement for one week out of the school year. Kids are taught that inequality is a thing of the past, something that ended with Martin Luther King Jr.  It is clear, especially based on recent events, that this is not the case. Our kids are our future and investing in them is investing in the future of this country. By signing this petition you agree that children in Michigan need and deserve a more complete education around race issues in America and the full version of Black History.
