PURPOSE

Opioid abuse in youths is growing in the U.S. and available addiction treatments are not being used. We advocate that the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) requires annual opioid abuse treatment education for all pediatricians.

THE PROBLEM

90% of opioid-addicted youths in the U.S. do not receive any treatment. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends medication assisted treatment (MAT), but less than 35% of opioid-addicted patients are prescribed any treatment medication. Patients are not prescribed treatment medications because doctors are not well informed about available medications. Without up-to-date education, pediatricians will continue to avoid MATs and prescribe outdated opioid-abuse treatments that contribute to high relapse rates in teens.

WHAT WE NEED

To improve the lives of opioid-addicted youths, the ABP must require annual opioid-addiction courses and MAT prescription courses for all pediatricians. Up-to-date education about therapy and authorization for pediatricians to prescribe medication will increase complete treatment of opioid use disorders and will decrease relapse rates among opioid-addicted youths. With personalized, effective treatments, opioid-addicted youths can live healthy, productive adult lives. The opioid-treatment education of our pediatricians should be of central importance as the children of today become adults of tomorrow. It is everyone’s job to help our children thrive.
