To Whom This May Concern,

We, the students of Roosevelt University, would like to thank everyone involved in making the difficult, yet necessary, decisions to not only close down our campuses, but also transition our curriculum to online format due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We highly appreciate knowing that our health and safety are a priority. We are thankful for the steps RU has taken to keep us informed and for the adjustments being made that will enable students to complete the remainder of the Spring 2020 semester.

RU is fortunate to have a dedicated staff willing to work with students during these difficult times. Unfortunately, not all students are able to accommodate as easily to the new conditions. Students will be missing out on face-to-face instruction, office hours, study groups, tutors, and all the other resources Roosevelt has to offer (including the library and computer centers). This alone will impact many of Roosevelts’s students. It is also known that not every student has the privilege of having a quiet and positive learning environment at home or can afford necessary materials such as high speed internet and/or the technology and programs needed to complete their classes and assignments.

During these difficult times students need the reassurance that a global pandemic will not hinder their path to success. Unfortunately there is also the worry for academic dishonesty which will leave honest students vulnerable and at a disadvantage. Working from home allows students to cheat without repercussions. Roosevelt will not have a way of monitoring or enforcing rules for this kind of issue.

The increased challenges related to the COVID-19 response will make successful completion of this semester more difficult, and we are asking that RU implement a pass/fail grading scale for the Spring 2020 semester and allow successful completion of courses to count toward meeting program requirements. A pass/fail grading system will not only promote honesty from students but will also encourage them to complete the necessary work needed to get closer to their degree. It will allow students with reduced funds and resources to better face these challenges with a greater chance of success. They will not have to worry about how to achieve an A or B grade while facing these additional barriers.

This is a stressful time for everyone. Many students are not only facing unemployment or reduced employment, but are finding it increasingly difficult to obtain basic essentials at grocery stores and shopping centers. Changing the grading scale is one way to ease a little bit of weight off students’ shoulders.

Schools such as Duke, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, Northwestern and MIT have already decided to make these changes for the remainder of the Spring 2020 semester and we believe Roosevelt University would be doing its students an honorable service in following the same path.

I hope you will consider this petition and make the necessary changes for the well-being and future of our students.

Thank you and stay safe.
