As a part of the Rockford University community, we would like to express our concerns regarding the cuts to the Philosophy Department at Rockford University. If Rockford University is to remain at its core a liberal arts institution, then it should not abandon the University’s tradition; A tradition which harkens back to the middle of the 19th century. Eliminating the philosophy major represents a departure from this rich history.

Cutting the philosophy major at Rockford University abandons our history and mission. The discipline recognizes humanity and shared dignity, now more relevant than ever—particularly in the contemporary political climate. This can cultivate a respect for differences in worldview and perspective as well as an appreciation of the cultural and ethnic diversity of our community, our country, and our world. Philosophy is the backbone of a liberal arts education and it is of utmost importance that we do everything we can to keep it at RU. We ask you to please reconsider your decision.
