IN A COUNTRY WHERE WOMEN CONSTITUTE 49% OF THE POPULATION, THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN POLITICS HAS BEEN CONSISTENTLY LOW. AT ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT, INDIA PERFORMS ABYSMALLY IN TERMS OF WOMEN’S REPRESENTATION IN POLITICAL BODIES
The average percentage of women’s representation globally stands at about 22%, whereas in case of India it is a mere 11.8%.
WHY PROMOTE WOMEN IN POLITICS?
·Political participation of women has the potential to change societies.
·It can have impact on outcomes for women and children especially in the distribution of community resources.
·Women’s political empowerment and equal access to leadership positions at all levels are fundamental to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and a more equal world.
·Their participation in peace negotiations and post-conflict reconstruction is important to ensure the safety and protection of children and vulnerable sections of populations.
·Equal representation in positions of power is a fundamental precondition for truly effective and accountable democracy
