Abhishek Daimari started this petition to President of India and

We, the signatories, are concerned citizens and want India to be forward-looking and progressive. We do not represent any group or political party, and each of us only has the best interest of our country and our Armed Forces at heart in making this Statement.

We therefore request that our respectful comments, requests and urgings in the following paragraphs be taken in that spirit alone.

We wish to draw your attention to the recent NIA raids at multiple locations in Jammu & Kashmir and Delhi which also include human rights activist Khurram Parvez, coordinator of Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society. We believe that these raids are a form of crackdown on the freedom of expression and dissent and a better solution to handling terror in the region is healthy dialogue. This is not only hampering the establishment of a line of communication between the people of Kashmir and the Government of India but also is being condemned by organisations on the international forum.

Given below are a few news articles which states some of the many comments by international bodies which also include Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.

For decades, the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been suffering human rights violations at the hands of the Indian Government and our army. The government’s restraints on the rights to free speech, right to information, access to internet, healthcare, and education are being intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. We understand that it is the Indian government’s iron-hand way of toppling the systemic structure of terror-financing and therefore, terrorism which has plagued the region for many years. As students and the future generation of this country, we want to make it absolutely clear from the get-go that we also want terrorism to be wiped out; however, we believe that it can be done without infringing the rights of the civilians and the natives of Jammu & Kashmir. A few glances of some broken/frustrated souls can be seen here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NTCJ7oKaL0). They don’t see any end in sight.

Going through Amnesty International’s reports on J&K’s human rights violations, we were horrified and were left wondering that how can we be so callous and apathetic towards the people of Jammu & Kashmir. In coherence with Amnesty International (https://amnesty.org.in/projects/justice-jammu-kashmir/), we demand that the Indian government do the following:

  • End the use of “sanctions” to prosecute security force personnel.
  • Ensure all cases of alleged human rights violations committed by security forces to be  tried in civilian courts.
  • Ban the use of pellet guns and tear gas on civilian crowds.
