"In India 44% of children under the age of 5 are underweight. 72% of infants and 52% of married women have anemia. Research has conclusively shown that malnutrition during pregnancy causes the child to have increased risk of future diseases, physical retardation and reduced cognitive abilities."

Objective:The purpose is to create awareness about the importance of community commitment to prevent malnutrition.

Malnutrition is a serious condition that occurs when a person's diet doesn't contain the right amount of nutrients. Malnutrition is directly responsible for 3,00,000 deaths per year in children younger than 5 years in developing countries and contributes indirectly to more than half of all deaths in children worldwide.

The fight against persistent underweight, stunting and malnutrition among children is based on inappropriate maternal, infant and young child feeding practices. Poor diet, frequent illness, and inadequate or inattentive care of young children can lead to malnutrition. If a woman is malnourished during pregnancy, or if her child is malnourished during the first two years of life, the child's physical and mental growth and development may be slowed and this cannot be made up when the child is older.

Children and pregnant women have the right to a caring, protective environment and to nutritious food and basic health care to protect them from illness and promote growth and development.

Let us leave a better, brighter future for the children of India. The problem is enormous, but not insurmountable. The time to act is NOW.

By signing this petition, we are asking you to acknowledge this problem and educate others to eliminate malnutrition from its roots. Let us build a strong nation where malnutrition is a thing of the past.
