Karthik Venkatachalam started this petition to President of India

In order to control the corona pandemic, Narendra Modi declared a hard lockdown in March 2020 impacting more than a billion Indians; especially hard-hit were the migrant labor who were offered very little in terms of facilities and shelter. While many countries that were hit by the pandemic chose to open up their sports stadiums to help ease the pain and suffering of their most vulnerable, by and large, Indians were left to fend for themselves.

Almost a year later in Feb 2021, in what can only be termed as a show of cultism by the government and hubris on the part of the individual who occupies the Prime Minister's seat, the Motera stadium in Gujarat was renamed as Narendra Modi stadium. Just a couple of months later in April, many Indians were devastated by the second wave of the corona pandemic. There was again an abject abdication of the government's responsibility towards its citizens. While Modi shed tears after weeks of a near-total collapse of India's health system, the tears were clearly a reflection of his emotion for the beating his carefully crafted self-image had taken; Modi's tears were not shed for the ordinary man and woman on the street.

This petition calls for renaming the Motera stadium to honor the real builders of the complex. Not a political figure who wields power without taking responsibility for the consequences of so-called hard decisions.
