On Dec. 12, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents approved resolutions making the consolidation Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern University official as of Jan. 1, 2018. The new Georgia Southern University comprises of three campuses; Statesboro, Armstrong, and Liberty.

On the Armstrong Campus, the central location of out-of-class student study and research is the Learning Commons. In fact, apart from the Library this is the central location for group-study, many tutoring sessions, printing facilities, etc. Students on the Armstrong campus were barely satisfied with this location opening from 8:30 am till 2:00 am on weekdays.

Since October 1, 2018, the Georgia Southern administration has cut back hours of the Learning Commons to be open from 10:00 am till 12:00 midnight. This significant cut in operational hours is going to adversely affect the "educational capacity" of the student body on the Armstrong Campus. Learning Commons officials have notified students that it is an issue due to budget constraints stemming from low enrollment, but the students believe that since the basic foundation of the operation of a University is "education," measures must be taken to reallocate funds to the Learning Commons and enable it to be open from 8:00 am till 2:00 am on weekdays.
