Why this petition matters

Started by Soomin Kim

Germain Rukuki is a father of 3 and Emelyne’s husband, who lived in Burundi. Their third child was a couple of weeks away from getting born. Then one day in July,  members of the security forces visited the family and started to investigate them. After questioning both the NGO workers (non-governmental organization) and the couple, they arrested Germain Rukuki. During the process of the interrogation, there weren’t any lawyers, leaving him defenseless. On April 26th, 2018, Ntahangwa High Court in Burundi,  sentenced 32 years in prison for “rebellion”, “breach of State security”, “participation in an insurrectional movement” and "attack on the head of state". He used to work as one of the members of the ACAT-Burundi, meaning ‘Actions by Christians for Abolition of Torture’ but it had shut down in 2016 for “tarnishing the image of the country.’ However, the evidence proving his guilty during the trial was an email he wrote to the ACAT-Burundi (Actions by Christians for Abolition of Torture) when they were still legal. He is currently in Ngozi prison, not being able to see his family. He and his third child had never met.
