President Obama, Secretary Kerry, & Ambassador Nominee Power: Support women's equal rights in countries in transition

Secretary of State John Kerry (Secretary of State)
Dear President Obama, Secretary Kerry, and Ambassador Power,

Democracy without rights for women and marginalized groups is not real democracy. I stand with the women of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) – and across the globe – who are fighting for the right to be part of their countries’ evolving political systems.

I appeal to the United States to use every opportunity to advance the equal rights, political participation, and representation of women and marginalized groups in countries in transition, and to ensure that this is a key component of U.S. foreign policy. It is the right thing to do, and it is in the United States’ national interest.

Only real democracy, which respects the human rights and equality of all citizens, will bring peace to the MENA region, and to the world.
