President Obama: Protect our Streams and Wetlands
Despite improvements in water quality since Congress passed the Clean Water Act in 1972, a whopping 53% of our streams and rivers still do not meet basic water quality standards.
What's standing in the way of clean water? Two Supreme Court decisions and policies by the last Bush administration that ignore sound science in deciding which waters are protected by the Clean Water Act. These actions dramatically weakened protections for streams that supply drinking water to more than 117 million Americans and millions of acres of wetlands that guard our communities against flooding.
To ensure clean water for all Americans, we must restore science-based policies that protect important streams and wetlands. The Izaak Walton League of America, with partner conservation and sportsmen groups, succeeded in convincing EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers to draft new, science-based directives that actually protect the nation's waters. Unfortunately, President Obama has put the new policies on hold.
We need President Obama's leadership to get science-based clean water policies across the finish line. Sign the petition right now and urge the President to give EPA and the Corps of Engineers the green light to implement policies that will keep our nation's waters clean and healthy.
- President of the United States of America
I support the science-based clean water policies awaiting implementation by EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers.
The EPA and Army Corps have drafted balanced policies that will begin restoring Clean Water Act protections to streams, lakes and wetlands. Weakened protections jeopardize streams that supply drinking water to more than 117 million Americans and wetlands that guard our communities against flooding. The water we drink and important fish and wildlife habitat are at risk without these policies in place.
I urge you to get science-based clean water policies across the finish line by giving EPA and the Corps of Engineers the green light to implement this policy.
